Chalk Out Action Plan to Make Agriculture Profitable : Parkash Singh Badal

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today urged the Centre to constitute a committee to chalk out an action plan to make agriculture a profitable venture so that farmers don't commit suicide. Agriculture is facing an acute crisis and the need of the hour was to save it, so as to ensure that country's food security was not in peril, Mr Badal told media persons on the sidelines of a function to observe martyrdom day of Parja Mandal leader Shahed Bhagat Singh Dhandogal.

The Chief Minister said that the powers regarding agriculture in the country were in the hands of the Centre and the state governments have hardly any role in fixing the prices of crops or the agriculture inputs.

Mr Parkash Singh Badal said that he had been raising the issue of agrarian crisis with the past and the current government at the Centre with a plea that the formula given by renowned agri-scientist Dr M S Swaminathan, regarding fixation of MSP of crops, must be implemented for the safeguarding the interests of the peasantry."Any further delay in this regard will prove fatal and the agriculture in the country will be ruined," he added. The Chief Minister said that it was unfortunate that even after passing of more than 67 years of independence the dreams of the freedom fighters have not been fulfilled yet.

Land should not be acquired without farmers' consent: Parkash Singh Badal

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has told the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on Land Acquisition Bill that land should not be acquired without farmers' consent.

"To safeguard the interests of farmers across the country, SAD has already made its stand crystal clear to the JPC regarding the proposed Right to fair Compensation and Transparency the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amendment) Ordinance, thereby pleading that not even an inch of land should be acquired by government without the consent of the farmers and the land owners," Badal said.

All SAD MPs in Lok Sabha have already submitted a detailed memorandum to the JPC chairman stipulating that land was a priceless asset of farmers and it should not be acquired by the government without the consent of the farmers/land owners, Parkash Singh Badal, who is also SAD patron said on the second day of his Sangat Darshan Programme at Jandiala Guru assembly segment.

Badal pointed out SAD has impressed upon the Punjab Government that wherever land was to be acquired, farmers should be given the option of accepting compensation at market rate plus displacement allowance or join a land pooling process under a policy as followed in Punjab.

Badal emphasised that the Punjab model of land acquisition policy should be followed while finalising a national policy on the subject as Shiromani Akali Dal was a votary of "fool proof" safeguards for compensating the farmers and those dependent on land including farm and labourers.
